Why Your Drum Pump Won't Prime or Build Pressure

Check the Foot Valve First

If your drum pump is not flowing material, not building pressure, or seems to run continuously without delivering fluid, the first item to inspect is the foot valve assembly.

The ball (42) must seal tightly against the seat (43) during each pump stroke. Any cured ISO, dried material, debris, rust, or contamination that prevents the ball from sealing properly will reduce pump efficiency and may completely stop fluid flow to the proportioner.

Common Symptoms

  • Pump runs but does not move material
  • Low fluid output
  • Slow priming
  • Loss of pressure
  • Pump cycles continuously
  • Inconsistent fluid delivery

What to Inspect

  • Ball (42) for wear or contamination
  • Seat (43) for nicks, scratches, or buildup
  • O-rings and seals for damage
  • Cured ISO or debris trapped between the ball and seat

Quick Fix

  1. Remove the foot valve assembly.
  2. Clean all components thoroughly.
  3. Inspect the ball and seat for wear.
  4. Replace worn parts as needed.
  5. Reassemble and test pump operation.

A perfectly functioning air motor cannot overcome a leaking foot valve. Before rebuilding the pump or air motor, always verify the ball and seat are sealing properly.

SPF Depot Tech Tip:
Many "bad pump" complaints are actually caused by contamination in the foot valve. A quick cleaning can often restore full pump performance and save the cost of an unnecessary rebuild.
